| Raising Pigs Raising pigs has (maybe) been one of the easiest "farm" things we have done. Our first set was 2 pigs that we picked up to "practice" on and we learned that it is a very gratifying experience and much easier than we expected. Pigs really dislike electric fencing so even with the jimmy rigged fencing of our first pig pen and one line of electric they stayed right at home! Our first 2 pigs were named Booger and Bacon and after successfully raising them to butcher size and getting to enjoy the unbelievable taste of home grown pork we have expanded to raising more so there is more to offer our community. Now one may ask, "What makes our pork better than inexpensive supermarket pork?" and when we first started with the hogs I asked that very same question. I have come to the conclusion through experience and research that the mere fact that we give our animals- yes even our pigs- a humane and stress free life while we have them that it makes for flavorful and less greasy pork. Because though our pigs are fed non- medicated feed, they do have only a hog mix to eat. They are not pastured due space (though this would be ideal for our long term goals) so they get hog feed and sometimes a treat of leftover garden greens. If you have ever seen what I would call a "pork factory" there are pigs basically piled on each other or in stalls so small they can barely turn around in them. They live in their waste and spend most of their life indoors and when they are moved it is a stressful time for them, causing adrenaline to course through bodies. They are not familiar with human interaction and when humans are around it is typically unpleasant. Our pigs are treated as well as any of our animals and in turn they give us delectable chops, steaks and hams! The 6 pigs we have now currently have a yard that (haha) is more square footage than our own home. We interact with them daily and they are excited to see us and play. They have shelter from the sun and weather and fresh water daily and many good mud holes to cool off in! They are treated with respect and live a stress free, care free life! |
