| What is Pastured Chicken? Well, thanks for asking.... It is a way of raising poultry that allows the birds to forage for their diet, making them taste better and be all over more healthy themselves as well as for the consumer. Most of the problems with poultry come from the way that they are raised in traditional manufacturing. The birds are not allowed to search for their food, and they are confined with many birds in their houses, and must breathe in the dust from their own waste. Thus, they are often fed a diet of feed that is medicated with antibiotic and steroids to keep them from getting sick and help them put on weight quickly. It is thought that these methods of raising poultry increase the spread of disease in chickens and turkeys not only from bird to bird- but also from bird to human. Pastured Poultry are raised in the pasture as the title would suggest. This can be done several ways- you can let them be free in the pasture to go and graze where they please or they can be raised in a contraption called a chicken tractor. We learned of the idea of the chicken tractor by reading a book written by Joel Salatin from Polyface Farms and fell in love with his methods. We will be raising them in the tractor to keep them safe from predators. A tractor is basically a home with no floor that we move everyday to a new area of the pasture. The birds will have fresh food and water every day, and in the new location they can forage and scratch for the grasses and bugs that would be in their diet if they were in their natural habitat. They help to enrich our soil by replacing the nitrogen with their waste and will eat up the bugs and worms. Pastured poultry along with any animal that is fed a diet close to what is "natural" for them is higher in Omega 3 fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals and have a lower fat content than foods that may come from feedlots that are fed medicated feeds in an un-natural environment. Our poultry will be better tasting and better for you, plus you know where it came from and you will be purchasing into your local farming community! We encourage you to stop by and see that our poultry and all of our animals are treated with respect and humanity. To learn more about the benefits of knowing who you are purchasing your food from, please visit our page "Chera's Mission". This year we will be selling chicken for $4.35/pound.
