Our chickens are raised just like the rest of our animals- as humanely and naturally as possible. Chickens were our first livestock purchase- even before the papers had been signed for our first small farm in Kennewick! Through research and experience we have learned that eggs from a free ranging hen taste better and are much better for you. In our opinion, a true free ranging hen has access to pasture where she can forage for grasses, greens and bugs that are a natural part of her diet. According to a study done by Mother Earth News, eggs from a free ranging hen are much more nutritious than eggs that are commercially produced. Our hens have access to all the pasture and foraging they want. They also have unlimited access to our own recipe of cracked, natural grains, that are grown by our neighbor and farmer friend. For information on healthy eggs and other food check these websites and take a look at our page, "Chera's Mission". "Meet Real Free- Range Eggs" Mother Earth News Egg Nutrition Study

Meet Our Chickens! Here is our flock! We have a good variety of laying hens- mostly barred rock, some buff orphington, rhode island red, black australorp and americaunas. Here they are below looking for bugs and grasses to eat so I can have some YUMMY eggs!
This hen is cozy in her nesting box and she is working real hard to make an egg! I think she wants some privacy! The picture below shows part of their coop- some nesting boxes and roosts- enough room for everybody!
The two pictures to the left show our chicken yard. We tried to let our hens have a life of "free- range" all last summer and we were very disappointed when we would stop getting eggs because they would find a "better" place to lay them. So we had to be realistic and decided to build them a nice yard. It is a good size and they have plenty of sunshine and room. I do still claim that I have free- range eggs because every day I go and open the yard up so they can get out to the pasture. Since they are basically done laying by about 2pm I generally open the doors at about 1 or so to let them into the pasture. They LOVE it and run all at once to their favorite spot and start pecking the ground!
