| Welcome! (and get ready!!) If you found yourself on this page I welcome you to read, learn and look for yourself into the quality of food that most Americans consume on a daily basis and the impact that it has on our personal health, our health as a country overall and the unseen burden on our economy. Not to mention that we should enjoy the taste of the food that we eat and believe me- when you have tasted true farm raised food you won't want to go back! This page may get a little lengthy, but the more I learn I feel burdened to pass this information on to those who will listen. So I encourage you to read on if this interests you and even if it doesn't-- you may find yourself as enthralled as I did! When we began our farming adventure it was about the health and a lifestyle for us and our kids (the two legged ones!), now, it is a mission to love our neighbor and that would be you! (please keep checking back to this page as I am in the process of gathering all of the info and getting it sorted and printed! Thanks!) While I continue to put this mission page together- here is a site that I found that gives many facts about the benefits of eating real farm and pasture raised foods. http://www.eatwild.com/healthbenefits.htm 1. How We Got Started 2. Nutritional Value In Our Food- Including Raw Milk 3. Economic Benefits of Eating Locally Farmed Food 4. Buyer's Beware- Labeling and Packing 5. Stress and its Effect on the Food We Eat 6. Are We What We Eat? How we got Started When my husband and I (mostly my husband) were first looking into buying a property I was just a naive about what I ate daily as the next person. Sure I knew some things about hormones and steroids in my milk, but it never really got my attention. I also wasn't really sure why my husband was SO interested in raising his own food. At the time, I don't think he knew the whole story either. But we continued to search for a property of course in our price range that was livable and while we searched we started to research-- well- food. We had already had the experience of fresh garden veggies from my first attempt at gardening out of a teeny, tiny garden and of course the taste was FABULOUS!! Why so good? Could it be that daily I could go pick what was just ripened, watch my kids eat tomatoes and peas off the vine without worrying about pesticides and the travel time from the veggie to my mouth- 0 days? So we also began to research goat meat since God gave Ryan an epiphany that we were to raise goats. And, believe it or not, goat meat is better than even chicken with less calories, fat and cholesterol and almost equivalent protein- just take a look at the chart below! Well, with all of the information we were learning and our continued pursuit for a place that we could get started on this adventure, we did finally find what we now call our "Happy L'il Homestead"! It is not big and definitely not fancy, but it has given us the ability to begin to live out some of our dreams. So on our 2.4 acres we have learned about raising goats, pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys and even children! Some things like goats, chickens and hogs are very manageable on our small farm, and as we have learned other things like cows are not. Everyday we learn something new and as we continue to learn and become more familiar with farming and raising animals we become more convicted that this decision to have this life for our family was the right one. |
